What to do in E-Comm today

Hello everybody,

I hope that you enjoyed the fire practice this morning......you all looked like you were having fun!

Today in E-Comm I want you all to make sure that you have written a personal profile (go to 'Layout' and click on 'edit' in the 'about me' box), and a blog description (click on 'edit' in the 'header' box).

I also want you to make sure that you've written a post about your excursion to London this week (click on 'new post' and get writing). Don't forget to give each of your posts a title!

When these tasks are completed (and your teacher has checked your texts for any mistakes), you can look at the 'how to...' list to the left of this page and follow the instructions for adding a visitor counter. This will tell you how many people have visited your blog so far.

If you open a new tab to sign into Blogger, you can keep this page open as well. This will let you follow the instructions while you're working on your blogs.

Finally, I want you all to make sure that you send your blog address to at least five people at home today!

Happy blogging! Don't forget to ask me or your teachers if you're having any difficulties.

The British Museum

Hello everybody.

I Hope you all enjoyed your excursion to the British Museum.

If any of you have any photos from the excursion or any photos from your stay here so far, I would be very grateful if you could save them in the folder called photos so far.

You can access this file by clicking on the green 'start' button at the bottom of your screen, then by clicking on 'My Computer' and then clicking on 'linesstudents on 'qwoodgc2'. Now you can put your photos in the 'Photos so far file' (if you have any problems, just ask me).

I hope you all have a good day today and remember- SPEAK ENGLISH!!!!!

Projects overview

Hello everybody,

Time to get started on some projects!

At the end of this course each student will have a blog (set up with comments enabled, a visitor counter and link list, photos or video on it, and a completed profile).

Apart from that, you also have to choose to do a few of the following things:

A Powerpoint Presentation

An A3 Colour Poster (an advertisement for your blog?)

A Website

A Newspaper page

A Crossword

A Comic strip

You also need to think about the content of your project. Here are some ideas to help you decide what to write about:

Excursion-related topics
Countries, nationalities, food, travel, culture etc.
People and Biographies - famous people or Lines people - staff, students, anyone!
Current affairs - news and politics
Queenswood News & Gossip
Daily Life at Lines (Activities, Classes, food, houses, discos, anything!)
Short stores, film or book reviews, horror stories etc.

And of course, if you write or research anything for any of your other classes or workshops, you can use it as the content of your projects here!

I might add more options to this as we think of them. If there is anything else you would like to do that we haven't thought of, let us know.

Have a look at the side bar to the left of this post. There are a list of links to blogposts we have written that tell you how to do things. If you are not sure how to do something, have a look there first, and try to work it out yourself. If you have any trouble, ask a friend or your teacher.

Powerpoint Presentation

Click on the green 'start' logo at the bottom of your screen. Put the cursor on the 'All Programs' tab (no need to click) and select Microsoft Office from the list (again, no need to click). Now select Microsoft Office Powerpoint 2007 and click to access the program.

Your presentation can be on a topic of your choice (see the list of suggestions on the Project Overview page). It should include the following things:

At least 6 slides (not including the title!)

Pictures

Text

Transitions between slides

Animated text

You will present your completed slideshow to your class (which means you have to be able to talk about your chosen topic!). The best ones might be able to be shown at the Friday Night Leaving Ceremony and Entertainment Evening!

How to Create a Newspaper Page

Use MS Word to create a page (or 2) that look like a newspaper or magazine page. Think about the type of writing that you usually find in newspapers and magazines:

News articles

Information articles (eg. travel, countries)

Horoscopes

Personal Stories

Film, book, music, theatre or concert reviews

Comic strips (see link in Project Instructions menu)

You need to write your newspaper content in the classroom before you come to the computer class so that in the computer room you can concentrate on the format and layout of your page.
Each page should have at least some of the following:

collumns

pictures

a headline/title & subheadings

a 'by' line (who is the article by?)

Ask your teacher if you have any questions, and of course, show us your work when it is finished!

How to Create a Comic Strip

Visit http://www.wittycomics.com/.
First you need an account so you can work with the website.

Click login, and enter the necessary data to create a new account. You will need to check your email to get your password.

Once you have a password, go back to the Witty Comics website, choose Login from the menu at the top of the page, fill in your username and password and you can start!

Click the Make a Comic link at the top – this takes you to the page where you can create your comic.

For your project, you need to create at least 4 comics each consisting of 3 frames – this should be one continuing story. Each frame needs to have at least 2 full sentences in English.

Don’t forget to give your story a funny title!

And don't forget to Click Save when you're done!

Create your own hero and hero blog!

Click on Hero machine, version 2.5

Choose a pose for your hero to start with.

After choosing a pose click on the drop down box that says pose and another box will appear that says pose loading options.

Click on complete.

Then choose the features and accessories for your hero, e.g. hair, mask, cloak etc. You can be as creative as you like with styles and colours.

Type in the box that says character name, underneath the picture of your character and give them a name.

To save your character if you haven't finished, click on the tab that says save.

Copy the text that appears in the box and save it in a Microsoft Word document. Then next time you log in, go to the hero website and click on the tab that says load (next to the save tab) and copy the text from the Word document into the box.

To save your character once you have finished- Press print screen (its the button on your keyboard- top right), then go into Microsoft Office Word/Picture Manager and click on paste.

Crop the picture by clicking edit picture (top of page) and then click on crop (right of page). Adjust the image to the desired size and when you are happy click file, then save as and save it on the P drive in your class folder.

Upload it just as you would a photo (If using Picture manager, look under how to... if you don't know how to do this).

If saving in Word just write the blog underneath and then you can transfer to picture manager later!Don't forget to make your blog exciting!!!!

How to Create a Crossword

First, you need to choose enough words - about 20 is good - and write the clues for your crossword. You can do this in the classroom before you come to the computer room (you can use a dictionary to help you with the definitions).

Once you have a list of words and definitions:

Go to http://www.puzzlemaker.com/

Click on the drop down menu that says 'choose other puzzles' and select 'criss cross'.

Enter a title for your puzzle, and the size you would like (the standard sizes are fine)

Type each word, followed by a space and then the definition.

Type the next clue on the next line.

When you are finished, click 'create my puzzle' and see the results! If you don't like the way it looks the first time, try clicking 'back' on your browser, and 'create my puzzle' again. It will probably be different each time!

Saving:

To save your puzzle, you will need to select it all in the browser, and then copy and paste it to MS Word.

Then save it in your folder like a normal Word document! Don't forget you can use 'Ctrl-C' and 'Ctrl-V' to copy and paste!

How to Create an A3 Poster

To prepare and print an A3 colour poster you first need to choose your topic.

You can make a full colour advertisement of your blog, or if you have a different idea, as your teacher if it's ok.

Firstly, you need to prepare your document to be printed as an A3 page:

Open Microsoft Word and go to File, in the top left corner and click on Page Setup.

In the upper part of the window that opens you will find three tabs. One of them is Paper. Click it and choose Paper Size: A3. You can also choose if you want 'Portrait' or 'Landscape' orientation.

You should add some WordArt to your ad! Go to Insert then Picture and click WordArt, choose a style, and type the text you want. Remember to move to wherever you wish and drag its corners to make it larger or smaller.

Do you want to change the background? Nothing simpler! Go to Format, click Background and choose the colour you want.

Add a picture or 3 to your page? Go to Insert / Picture and choose From File to locate the picture you want in your folder. Remember you can always choose to include ClipArt in your ads
Remember to preview your work of art before you print it! That can easily be done by going to File / Print Preview.

Have fun with your creations!

How to include a description of your blog

It is a good idea to include a description of your blog beneath your blog's title. This will tell your visitors what your blog is about and why you're writing it.

Select 'Layout' then click on 'edit' in your blog's title box.

Write a description of your blog in the 'Blog Description' box.

Don't forget to click on the orange 'save' button when you've finished.

Now click on 'view blog' to see the finished result!

If you want to change your blog description at any time, just follow the instructions above...

Happy blogging!

How To Add a Visitor Counter

To add a visitor counter, you need to sign up to a site such as statcounter.com, which provides free visitor counters for websites.

Once you have a counter, you can see how many people are visiting your blog.

To get started, just go to http://www.statcounter.com/ and click on "Register Now".

Follow the instructions to complete registration.

Make sure you tick the box that makes your stats public, so everyone can see who is looking at your blog!

At the end of the registration process, statcounter will say 'here is your code'.

You now have to add that code to your blog.

Select and copy the entire code for the 'Visible Counter' so that you are ready for the next step.

To add the counter to your blog, you need to go to your dashboard, then click on 'Layout', then 'Add a Gadget' in the place where you want your counter to appear.

Find the element called 'HTML/Java script' and click 'Add to Blog'.

Add a title if you want, and then paste the code from statcounter into the box, and click 'Save Changes'.

Your counter should now be visible when you view your blog!

If you have any problems, ask your teacher!

How To Enable Comments and Word Verification

Everyone should make sure their blogs have visitor counters and link lists.

Click on the links here or in the side bar if you don't know how to do this.

You should also make sure that anyone can comment on your blog by going to 'settings', then 'comments' and changing the 'who can comment' box to 'anyone'.

The only problem with this is that then robots can write advertising comments on your blog.

To stop this, look further down the page for 'show word verification on comments' and change it to 'yes'.

Now you should send an email to your friends and family to ask them to read your blog everyday and write comments on it!

How to Create a Link List

Click on 'Layout'

Click on 'Add a Gadget' in the sidebar of your blog.

Find the 'Link List' option, and click 'Add to Blog'

Type a title for your list, such as 'Wordsworth Blogs' or whatever you like.

Don't worry about the number of links or sorting (leave it blank) but go straight to the 'url' and enter the url of the first blog you want to link to. It is easier to copy and paste so that you know it is exactly correct. (Remember you can use the keyboard shortcuts Ctrl-C anc Ctrl-V to copy and paste!)

Type the name of the blog - this will be what you actually see in your sidebar.

Click on 'Add Link'

Repeat the last two steps for all the blogs in your class (but not your own, of course!)

Remember to click 'Save Changes' when you are done!

How to Upload Pictures/Photos in Blogger

Sign in to blogger as usual.

Start a New Post (or edit an old one).

Click on the tiny picture of a picture above the text box where you usually write your post.

In the new window that appears, click on "Browse", and find the file where the picture you want is saved.

When you have chosen your picture, click on the blue "upload image" button.

Wait for your picture to be uploaded, then click "Done"

Remember to click on the orange "Publish Post" when you have finished uploading your picture and typing your entry

Welcome to Queenswood

Hello everybody!

First of all I guess I should welcome you all to Lines and to your E-Comm lessons. When you log onto this blog each day, you will find useful tips about creating your own blog and information about your tasks for each lesson.
